Am I Too Extra?

As black women we are often misunderstood by how we are perceived. Often our character has been described as being too loud, too aggressive or too confrontational. In terms of our looks, there has been much discussion around us feeling we have to conform to the expectations of societal norms, particularly at job interviews or in a work place environment.

We have all seen the natural hair movement, most recently Gabriella Union suggested that she was dropped from America’s Got Talent for wearing hairstyles that were considered ‘too black’.

In terms of our overall style, in general; black women naturally have that Black Girl Magic, we have swagger that comes across in the way we present ourselves.

Our style is mainly independent to what the general trends are, or we find ways of incorporating trends to fit us – especially as 95% of fashion is still represented by women that do not look like us.

What does ‘am I too extra’ mean to you?

This rooted from a conversation had with Merisha Stevenson. Who is a successful business woman in her own right and also a fabulous stylista, who unapologetically rocks her nails, clicks her 5inch heels and unashamedly changes her hairstyle at every opportunity.

Here is her take on why she isn’t extra enough….

I’m the girl who you might see coming, because I am not a plain Jane. I am confident, classy and colourful; but for some, I hear, ‘I am too extra’!

And that’s not a compliment!

It suggests that my long nails are too much; my matching shoes and lipstick is over the top; my wardrobe choices are garish, and my bubbly personality is too dramatic.

But for me, it means something different.

Let me explain.

As a black British woman, growing up and becoming a professional involves being sanitised. Yet, our African Caribbean roots are characterised with colour and flavour. Our clothes, food and even language is filled with spice, and sometimes it’s the spiciest of spice. But instead of that feistiness and fearlessness of expression being a source of inspiration and celebration; in Britain, they became attributes that required purification, fumigation and decontamination.

I had to learn how to tone it down for the professional and corporate world, and that involved straightened hair, simply jewellery and a uniform of black, grey and navy blue. It was part of my grammar school education.

And I did it. For a long time, I towed the acceptable line, and got into the practise of ‘dressing for the job I wanted’ as I worked my way up the corporate ladder and later into self-employment.

And then one day it started to happen; and I don’t know really if it was my journey towards understanding myself, relinquishing the need to prove myself or being black becoming a fashion and therefore more acceptable: but gradually the real MS started to stand up.

I became more authentic, and truthfully it was an effort. It was emotional!

Social conditioning is a real and finding your own REAL, after being swayed away from the idea that everything ‘black’ is lacking in beauty is challenging. Embracing the 4c in my hair, the curve in my waist and the ghetto in my fabulous, took time.

But as I did, I started to find my peace, and with that came the extra.

Extra confidence, extra self-love and extra growth.

So I am too extra? We actually I am not extra enough!

We couldn’t agree more, Zanzi Beauty is all about self celebration, self love and self expression. Beauty ideals are slowly but surely changing, particularly when black women are winning titles in major beauty pageants across the world.

We need to continue to trailblaze our own style and push the boundaries in self expression, whilst not being hindered by conformity.

Our black is beautiful, celebrate yourself

Making Zanzi Work For You: For Influencers & MUA’s

This document is Private & Confidential, and is only to be used for the intended recipient. You do not have permission to share, copy or lift any part of this document unless stated by us, or with prior written approval by Zanzi Beauty.

Introduction

Thank you for making the decision to be part of the Zanzi Team as an influencer, advocate and ambassador of Zanzi Beauty.

To support your success in reaching out to contacts, followers and your customer base, we have developed a set of best practice guidelines and expectations to follow. This is to ensure the brand is represented in a uniform manner, and that we adhere to European Law regarding Intellectual Property/copyright.

Most importantly the guidelines are tools to help you convert sales and increase your commission.

First Steps:

Here are the first steps that we recommend you do once you have signed and agreed to the terms and conditions.

  1. Take note of your discount code

We recommend you put this code in your bio on your Instagram and also use it whenever you post anything related to Zanzi. It is important your followers know you are the go to person for Zanzi products and will enable them to have a 10% discount off their first purchase. We use this discount code to track your sales and commission, therefore, it is important that your followers use the discount code at the checkout when they order their purchases. Here is an example that you can copy and paste to use on your social media posts and bio.

“Zanzi Beauty Influencer: Use discount code ‘Shana10’ to get 10% off your order. Go to www.zanzibeauty.com and use it at the checkout!”

As you can see, we are not expecting you to process the orders, all you need to do is guide your customers to the website and to input your unique discount code when they place their order.

  1. Introduce your followers to Zanzi Beauty

Introduce your followers to our brand by doing a short video on why you decided to be an influencer. What is it about Zanzi that got you engaged in the brand? This will help your followers buy in to the Zanzi brand. Here are some points that will help you:

  • The ethos of Zanzi is to ‘Celebrate Yourself’, that’s what we are all about, celebrating the beauty of women of colour in all our diversity
  • Our makeup is specifically formulated for our skin tones, which means it is highly pigmented
  • Our foundations are formulated taking into consideration our warm undertones so it will not leave you looking ‘ashy’
  • We care about the skin we’re in, so all our makeup is Paraben free, Talc free and also hypoallergenic
  • We care about how our products are tested, all Zanzi makeup is animal cruelty-free and we are registered with PETA’s ‘Beauty Without Bunnies’ Program
  • Our makeup has staying power! Once it is applied correctly it won’t come off, we recommend removing our Lip Creams with coconut oil.
  • Our Nubian Gold eyeshadow in our Zuri Palette has 22 Carat Gold Leaf in it, so it really is gold.
  • We are a fresh British Brand and see ourselves as the next generation is cosmetics
  • Our makeup is high quality that is affordable
  1. Add a Zanzi Highlight on your Instagram under your bio

this will enable you to highlight any Zanzi stories you create and will also get any new followers upto speed with all your Zanzi marketing and promotions.

  1. Creating our Zanzi Tribe

We recommend you invite your followers to like our Instagram and FB pages @zanzibeauty.official. This is so they can see what the brand is about and will help them engage with our wider audience. In particular, our FB covers wider subjects that affect women of colour, we are not just a cosmetics brand, we are a movement of celebration.

We expect you to support other Zanzi MUA’s and Influencers, and in turn for them to support you. So please do like their posts and share their posts on your stories, it will help you with your followers buy-in.

It is important that you like, share and comment on our posts too, we take great care in ensuring that the content we put up reflects our brand identity and voice. It is also an easy way to market Zanzi to your followers without constantly creating your own marketing material. Please note: We DO NOT advocate using screenshots of our posts, we make sure we credit MUA’s and photographers accordingly. You can either share posts directly or copy the link to one of our posts and include it in your own posts.

Write a review on FB and encourage you followers to do the same. Nothing is greater than a peer review, if love our products as much as we do then make sure you shout out about it. We will share all reviews and also credit you accordingly.

Your Marketing Material: Do’s and Dont’s:

Do include us!

When you create posts please tag us in your posts so we can share your content; @zanzibeauty.official. Make sure your settings are ‘public’ so we can share your content with ease. We will always credit you and provide your social media handles on anything we share to potentially increase your followers.

Get your friends and family involved. If you do a great makeup look, tag your friends and ask them to share and comment, or better still, do a makeup look on them.

ALWAYS mention what Zanzi products you used in your looks and promos with the full name, here are some examples for you to copy and paste:

Matte Liquid Lip Cream “Name of Lip Cream”

Metallic Liquid Lip Cream “Name of Lip Cream”

Zuri Eyeshadow Palette “Names of Shades Used”

Flawless Liquid Cream Foundation “Name of Shade”

Always give credit where credit is due. If your look was created by another MUA or photographed professionally then make sure you include their names and social media handles in your posts – we will also do the same by copying your text when we share your posts.

DO NOT use our logo without our prior permission. If you would like to use our logo please email shana@zanzibeauty.com stating why you how the logo will be used. We have a created a banner and frame that you can use on picture and include in your video productions for your makeup looks, this is included in the folder that goes with this presentation. It is transparent so can be overlayed on your marketing material using any app that allows pictures to be added on pictures/videos.

Do Not use filters on your pictures. It is super important that we are transparent in how our colours look, this will help your followers decide what to purchase and be confident that they get what they see, it also adheres to Trading Standards. Therefore, please ensure your pictures are clear, focusing on the makeup look and that it is as close to the natural light colours as possible. We understand there may be times where this is impossible (i.e. at night etc) however, put a positive caveat in your posts such as “the colours of the makeup look super sexy under this lighting” so your followers understand that the lighting may change the look of the makeup.

DO take good quality pictures if you want to be represented on our main social media pages. We will share all good quality pictures that fit into our brand representation on our main Instagram and FB pages inline with any particular campaigns we are running (for example, Christmas and NYE looks). Any other media that is of good quality will also be shared, so for example, going out on a night out with friends wearing Zanzi. If it doesn’t fit our quality standards we will still share it on our stories and like your posts.

DO get written authorisations and permissions if you are creating a video (such as an unravelling) or image on a film set, studio, or anywhere else that is not public or at your home. Be aware that many companies will have brands sponsoring them and will not be too happy if you do an ad-hoc video promoting Zanzi without prior permission. We take no responsibility if you go beyond these guidelines and we will not share or like the post on our social media.

DO use our hashtags in all your posts: #celebrateyourself #zanzibeauty

Turning your “Posts into Pounds”

For effective social media engagement results and higher rates of sales conversions from “posts to pounds’ here are some ideas to put into practice:

Everyone loves to watch unravellings of a new product/brand. This would be the first step in visually introducing Zanzi to your audience. For videos (which we think is best for unravellings) ensure you have clear sound/audio and a background that is not too distracting. In addition, make sure the products can be seen in full on the video. Talk about the packaging, the size, the feel of the products and anything else you think your followers would be interested in knowing.

Promote Lip Creams using a boomerang or image, matching your Lip Cream with your nail colour, eyeshadow colour or clothing and accessories.

Do a post with a swatch test on your wrist or forearm using your Lip Cream, Fondations or the Zuri Palette

Do a themed look, bare in mind it is the party season at the moment. So any christmas looks, NYE looks are brilliant at this time of year

Let us promote you! We have a blog and have already started promoting our MUA’s by creating blogs on them. If you would like a blog done on you then contact shana@zanzibeauty.com to find out more.

Get writing, if you love writing, then do a blog and send it to us, we will format it and publish it under the Zanzi banner and will credit you accordingly. We will also send you a link that you can share with your followers that will go directly to the blog

Create Stories – Your stories don’t have to be major film or photography productions, but your everyday life using Zanzi, this is the perfect way to engage with your audience

Create polls on your stories asking your audience what looks they would like to see

On stories you can ask your audience to vote on looks they most like and ask them to share

Do a ‘before and after’ look, especially on a Tuesday, you can then hashtag it as #transformationtuesday

Create tutorial videos on particular looks using Zanzi, making sure you highlight exactly which Zanzi product you are using

Do a facebook Live, this is a fantastic way to engage with your audience in real time, make sure to promote when you will be doing your live so your followers are aware in advance to optimise on your reach

Balancing ‘Life’ and Living the Dream.

All that glitters may not be gold, but the rewards are priceless.

How many of us have wanted to change career? to do something that allows our creative side to shine. Most of us would love to follow our dreams, but often there are more than a few things standing in our way.

Keeping the roof over our heads and paying the bills are just some of the practicalities. Add in into the mix being a black woman, often having to prove yourself more than your white counterparts – it almost feels impossible, but it can be one of the most rewarding experiences.

We have all had those conversations with our parents or elders who wanted us to have ‘respectable’ careers (doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher), to be secure in our professions. Being a creative was definitely not part of the conversation! but the world has changed, the value of living a fulfilling life is just as important.

Zanzi speak to Muibat Adedoja, a full time nurse and professional MUA on how she juggles the <double burden> of ‘life’, and living the dream, as well as the fulfilling rewards she has reaped…

“Makeup has always been a big part of my life.  It’s has the power to change how you feel about yourself.

A few people see makeup as a way to conceal, but I see it as an enhancement, something that brings out the beauty that was already within.

Although makeup is a big part of my identity and life, I am currently working as a full time nurse. Juggling both sides of my life as a makeup artist and a nurse does have its challenges!

The challenges being a makeup artist include people trying to undermine your work by challenging you about your prices, to not getting the recognition you feel you deserve for your work.

As a black female in the industry, you are required to go that extra mile in order to get noticed and even when you are, you are still sometimes not as valued as your non-black counterparts.

Muse: @chiomayaboyo ¬ Photographer: @duduimages – MUA: @honiglam_makeover

In addition, as I do work full time, there has been instances where I would be booked to work on the ward but be called for a makeup booking. Times like these I find quite challenging as I feel forced to have to choose between two parts of me. There’s the practicality of me working my nurse shift to take care of the bills, but also taking my booking to allow my creative side to flourish.

All this being said, I would not change it for anything as I have also had some amazing times and experiences. Collaborations with other creatives to bring to life personal visions, while also attending events to both celebrate the industry and further my knowledge has to be one of my favourite things about being a makeup artist.

Muse: @heycocohead – Photographer: @duduimages – MUA: @honiglam_makeover

Overall, my experience as a black woman in the industry has been extraordinarily fulfilling. Therefore, watch this space as I have more to offer and more creative works coming out soon.”

As the saying goes, there is nothing to it, but to do it. Yes, it will be hard work. Yes, you may have to trade your social life. Yes, there may be a few tears along the way, but the rewards of authentically living your dream is priceless.

Top 5 Makeup Trends for Christmas & NYE, for the Melanated Beauty

We’ve just managed to scrape the last of our Halloween makeup off our faces, all our eyes (literally) are now on Christmas and New Years Eve…

So, what are the makeup trends that you should be incorporating in your looks for the party season?

Here are our top 5 makeup trends from the runway with examples from MUA’s and Influencers on Instagram that we (quite frankly) hero worship!

In general, there are a few key things to note from the runways, the strong eyebrow is not in vogue, rather a soft but present brow is. There were plenty of long fluttering eyelashes, in every style and colour along with line work and the use of striking contact lenses.

The good news for us melanated beauties is that the use of strong vibrant colours was all over the runway!

1- Let’s start with the base, your face.

It’s all about achieving that dewy skin look. Fresh, glowing and super hydrated but notably without the use of shimmers. Pat Mcgrath did this superbly well using foundation and eyeshadows that were neutral. Victoria Beckham and Emilio Pucci both had the dewy skin vibes going on.

https://www.instagram.com/breenylee/

2- Adding that touch of sparkle

Nothing says party season more than a touch of sparkle and glitter! Good news for us is that the runway was filled with looks that ranged from ‘more is more’ metallic eyeshadows from lid to brow, to more subtle looks like a flash of gold over the lid.

A more wearable way to make this look work is to have the rest of the face neutral with all the drama on the eyes. This was the look at Halpern, which had an Ancient Egyptian feel about it.

https://www.instagram.com/strashme

We have the biggest girl crush on Ashley who is an emerging talent. Ashley Strong, from Alaska is giving fresh, bold artistry to the beauty community. Ashley inspires others to be loud, to be their authentic selves, and creating dope content, especially on her Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd3HPhe7tCp1mS0HUDnuE4A

3- Colourful wings and shadow

We are all about that winged liner life. The runways were full of wings being achieved with colour such as Guy Laroche who had perfectly applied liner in red, to Philipp Plein who used lime green adding a pop of colour. Other things to note were the use of impactful eyeshadow above the crease to create a winged look using popping colour.

https://www.instagram.com/naataachii_

4- Golden Eyes

Gold is one of the go-to shades we love the most, it suits our skin tone and we have yet to see a melanated beauty that doesn’t own anything gold coloured in their makeup kits. Gold speaks glamour and regal in one, the sure-fire way to be noticed when out partying. Gold mixed with a smokey eye as seen at Michael Kors and a more modern take at LaQuan Smith are the two looks to go for.

https://www.instagram.com/beccy_ldn

5- Red Lips

Amongst so many looks on the runway, we loved the classic red lip. It speaks timeless elegance and of course is something we can all replicate. There were various shades of red from an almost burnt orange to a more berry red. The red we loved were the matte looks which were vibrant and attention grabbing as seen at Luisa Beccaria and the Tadashi Joshi show.

These are our 5 makeup trends that you can incorporate in your looks over the party season. All the looks can be achieved using Zanzi Beauty products and following the MUA’s we’ve highlighted.

But it doesn’t stop there, the piece de resistance is all our makeup is not only cruelty free (we are part of PETA’s beauty without bunnies programme), but also free from talc and parabens. In addition, our cosmetics are rigorously tested to comply with United States FDA and European Union standards – which are the toughest in the world.

Zanzi Beauty is more than a cosmetic brand, we are creating a movement of self celebration and awareness of black beauty in all its glorious diversity…

Our Instagram page (@zanzibeauty.official) visually celebrates women of colour in all our brilliance, whilst our Facebook page (@zanzibeauty.official) will keep you current and on-trend with all things related to black beauty and more…Like, follow, share, engage and be part of the tribe!

We are ready to share our love of vibrant colours, in order for you to stand out from the crowd and be counted!
